Suicidal Thoughts Linked to Lamictal

In January 2008, the FDA issued a serious warning stating that Lamictal, an antiepileptic drug, may cause users to have suicidal thoughts. Recent studies have shown that Lamictal, along with numerous other antiepileptic drugs, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and tendencies in users.

Lamictal and Suicidal Thoughts

By the end of 2008, the FDA required the manufacturers of Lamictal and other antiepileptic drugs to include warnings about the tendency of users to have suicidal thoughts. Officials based this warning on 199 clinical trials that showed that those who participated by taking the drug had suicidal thoughts at double the rate of those who did not. Because of this study and the dangers associated with antiepileptic drugs, the FDA added a “Suicidal Behavior and Ideation” entry to the “Warnings and Precautions” section of Lamictal’s label. While only approximately 1 in 500 patients reported experiencing suicidal thoughts while taking Lamictal, this side effect is extremely serious and should not be overlooked.
